How both teachers and non-teachers can access NAGRAT bundle | 10GB/20GB @Ghc27/Ghc54

The NAGRAT bundle was launched for members of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT). However, there are no control measures to restrict patronage to only members of the association or to restrict usage to only staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Background of NAGRAT bundle

In April 2023, a hugely discounted internet data package was launched for members of NAGRAT. NAGRAT is the second largest teachers’ union in the country.

The data package is a special offer negotiated between the union and the biggest telecommunication company, MTN. The partnership offers 10GB of internet data to members at Ghc27. Also, a 20GB internet data package is offered at Ghc54.

With reference to the market price of the internet data provided by the mobile network companies, this offer could be considered the cheapest short-term offer.

How to access the NAGRAT MTN data bundle

Individuals were required to dial an USSD short code on their phone to access the offer. The short code is *227*2234#

After dialling the shortcode, a menu will appear for the member to select from any of the two offers available. That is either the 10GB offer or the 20GB offer.

The applicant will then be asked to input his or her phone number he or she wishes to receive the data on.

Later, a message for approval of the cost involved will be sent to the applicant. However, in the absence of the approval message over a reasonable time, the applicant can visit the pending transaction “approval” page on his or her mobile money wallet to approve the payment for the internet data bundle.

There is also a marketplace place store (link). The market place store is an online platform where members purchase the NAGRAT data bundle. The link only replaces the USSD code (*227*2234#). The respect of the process which involves payment for the data is the same as those processes involved after dialling the shortcode. Conditions for enjoying the NAGRAT bundle

It is advertised that individuals can obtain their purchased data within 24hours. However, others receive their data after 24 hours.

Also, it is advised that people should desist from purchasing the data package on weekends and holidays. This is because people may not obtain their data within 24hours after making payment during the weekends and holidays.

Complaints

Complaints about the NAGRAT data bundle are required to be lodged to a number through WhatsApp messages or through text messages. However, making calls to the number is not allowed and the call will not be attended to. In most cases, calls to the number may not even go through. How and why non-NAGRAT members and non-teachers can access the package

It must be disclosed that there is no hindrance to anyone purchasing the data bundle. There is no requirement to prove to be a NAGRAT member.

Also, there is no requirement to prove himself or herself as a teacher.

In effect, anyone, whether a teacher or not, whether a NAGRAT member or not, can easily dial the shortcode to access the NAGRAT Bundle.

There is no means to verify the status of anybody who tries to purchase the NAGRAT MTN data bundle.

It is believed that the absence of a need for any verification or proof as a teacher was done on purpose. It was done on purpose to allow everyone, including teachers who are NAGRAT members, to also enjoy the package. And also, it is believed it was done on purpose to allow members of the general public to take advantage of the loophole.

Reforms

The NAGRAT MTN internet data package has been in existence for barely a month. It has, however, undergone some reforms.

Initially, people were encouraged to purchase the data anytime, any day. But buying the data on weekends and holidays is now being discouraged. The reason for discouraging purchases over weekends and holidays was not specified but it is believed the purpose is to avoid a backlog of offers on the next working day. Also, the reason might be to avoid discontent among applicants for not receiving their package as early as possible.

Another reform that was noticed is the name of the account for receiving payment. The name in the previous account was “kowri”. The name is considered to be significantly different from the name of the teachers’ union, the National Association of Graduate Teachers. Making payments into such an account was considered suspicious, especially in a country where fraud is widely spread.

Probably on feedback, the name of the account has been changed to the National Association of Graduate Teachers.
