WAEC removed these topics for WASSCE 2023 | Don’t expect them

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has exempted some topics for WASSCE. WAEC is used to examine students on those topics. However, candidates should not expect questions on those topics.

Teachers who are also preparing candidates for the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) can afford to skip those topics for WASSCE purposes only.

WAEC disclosed the information during the recent sensitization workshop organized for Heads of Departments (HoD). The HoDs are required to pass on the information to the teachers in their departments.

The workshop took place on Friday, 2nd March 2023. The West African Examination Council organized the nationwide workshop

Two types of syllabi

There are two academic syllabi for both teachers and students. The two syllabi are used concurrently by teachers. The syllabi are
a. WAEC syllabus or WASSCE topic
b. GES syllabus

a. What are WASSCE topics/ syllabus

The WASSCE topics or syllabus is the topics that the West African Examination Council (WAEC) focuses on when they are setting their examination.

WAEC is responsible for examining final-year students of Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools in the country.

The examination body, therefore, uses its WASSCE topics to guide its examination questions. Teachers and students also use the same syllabus to guide their preparations for the WASSCE preparation

b. GES syllabus

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is the institution in charge of implementing pre-tertiary educational policies of the state. The GES syllabus, therefore, provides a guide to the educational policies and curriculum of the state.

The GES syllabus is, therefore, broader than the WAEC syllabus, in an attempt to cover all the student’s educational needs and the country’s aspirations at large.

Which syllabus to cover

Teachers and learners are always in a conflict of interest concerning which syllabi to use.

However, teachers and learners are encouraged to focus on the Ghana Education Education (GES) syllabus to achieve the country’s and its students’ educational needs.

Which syllabus is examinable | Topics for WASSCE

The West African Examination Council syllabus is used to set WASSCE examinations. Therefore, teachers and learners are required to use the WASSCE syllabus to prepare for the examinations.

However, some topics in the WAEC syllabus are no longer examinable. Preparing students on such topics for WASSCE will be a disservice to both the teacher and the student.

Topics that are no longer examinable in WASSCE

The following topics for WASSCE are no longer necessary. Both past and current chief examiners who moderated the workshops informed the Heads of Departments.

The under-listed topics are in connection with integrated science only.

The topics for other subjects, which are no longer examinable will be provided in subsequent publications.

WAEC eliminated the following integrated science topics for WASSCE from examinations:
1. Separation of mixture
2. Internal structure of ruminants
3. Drainage in a soil sample
4. Carbon cycle
5. Urine formation

Reason for exempting the topics for WASSCE

The chief examiners gave a straightforward answer concerning the reason why WAEC exempted only one of the topics.

The chief examiners disclosed that WAEC examines the separation of mixtures at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) level only. And therefore, WAEC does not consider the separation of mixtures at the Senior High School level.

WAEC examiners did not provide any other response why the other topics for WASSCE are no longer examinable

What students must expect in integrated science WASSCE?

The chief examiners mentioned that WASSCE candidates must master the mole concept very well. The examiners explained that the mole concept is likely a topic for WASSCE. However, candidates find it difficult to answer over the years.

Candidates must also master the names and uses of tools, equipment, and/or instruments under eac topic for WASSCE.

  1. I followed the past questions and mock questions keenly but I be grateful if you could send me English language mock questions from those schools you sent their science and mathematics.
